The people of Gentry do not talk much about this, but it defines Mackie’s life. He is one of a very few children in the town of Gentry who survived to this age - usually when a faerie child (but they don’t call it that) is left in place of a human one, it dies very young. I was griping the other day about the difficulty of creating a fairy world that has enough specificity to satisfy me, and although The Replacement doesn’t completely nail this, it does a pretty good job. Now Halloween is just one more obstacle between me and Christmas.Īh changelings. I am not a big fan of Halloween ever since I stopped trick-or-treating. I am writing this post in mid-October, but I am predicting that I ended up doing nothing for Halloween. Happy All Saints’ Day! More to the point, happy anniversary, Saints! I will always love you no matter what.

At night, instead of singing campfire songs, Rudy spends his time planning various escapes from the camp. There, Rudy is determined to become his own man, by making snide comments of the camp founder’s bow-legs, playing chess instead of the scheduled activities, or making a salaté for his counselor. Description: I Want to Go Home is the story of a boy’s various escape attempts from Camp Algonkian. Of course, only certain artists can lose colour and still add drama to their visual storytelling. With Batman, its all the things that make the character so appealing. What you get is a comic infused with shadow and mystery and atmosphere. It’s specifically an artful intent – a new way of looking at a piece of work with new eyes. The Noir series of collections is DC’s way of compiling great stories full of great art – while subtracting the colour. Illustrated by: Francesco Francavilla, Jock What followed in the pages of Detective Comics was sheer brilliance.įollow me after the jump for all the info on the hardcover collection that is Batman Noir: The Black Mirror! Under writer Scott Snyder and artists Jock and Francesco Francavilla, that change of character – similar yet oh-so-different – gave way to a whole host of…possibilities. And that left a vacuum in Gotham City – one that Dick Grayson, the original Robin, decided to fill. You see, he had travelled back in time at the hands of the villainous Darkseid, making everyone in the present believe he was actually dead. Well, in the pages of his main two monthly comics he had: Detective Comics and Batman. Before DC Comics’ re-launch of their line of publications nearly five years ago, the affectionately titled “New 52”, Batman had gone missing for the better part of a year. Four women with skills, smarts, and secrets-all feeling over the hill and out of the race. From the bestselling author of Between Husbands and Friends and An Act of Love comes a wise, wonderful, and delightfully witty "coming of age" novel about four intrepid women who discover themselves as they were truly meant to be: passionate, alive, and ready to face the best years of their lives. Hayden is hard-working, loving, responsible but she’s also a smartass and I love that aspect of her. I love Hayden, even more with Tanya Eby’s voice, which I thought was perfect. Yet the promise of money pushes her to answer, only to discover that the author of the ad is Samantha Thomson, the most arrogant and rudest surgeon at the hospital. When she stumbles upon an ad on craigslist looking for a temporary bride, the idea seems ludicrous at first. A lot of what she earns goes to her family in Miami. Hayden Pérez is a nurse in New York who, despite working as much as she can and being very careful with her expenses, is struggling financially. I won’t spoil but when the reader, along with Hayden, finds out why Sam needed that fake marriage, I loved Sam even more. I think this one has the best reason I have read. If it needs me to suspend my disbelief, I might still enjoy it if the writing is good but it won’t be the same. I usually like the fake-romance trope but it has to have a believable reason. I really liked Tanya Eby’s narration and the different voices, including Hayden’s nephew (children are not easy). This time, I listened to the audiobook version, and it was also wonderful. |
